Last week we borrowed Daryl’s canoe (he went to Carleton U!) and paddled around Tortuga River. Highlights were a cayman and a white-necked puffbird!

We just returned from Madre Selva, our much colder site with no internet where we get to do more cooking. We saw and banded a lot of new birds, most commonly Mountain Gems, Mountain Elaenia, Ruddy-capped Nightingale Thrush, Yellow-thighed Finch, Chestnut-capped Brush Finch, Wilson’s Warbler (!!), Black-cheeked Warbler, Collared Redstart, Common Bush Tanager, and Rufous-collared Sparrows. Yes!!!

We cooked what we could, stuff like curries, lentil salads, rice and beans, even made a pizza in the wood stove. Our coworker in Tort has some lemongrass and citrus leaves for us to take to MS next time!

We took the three buses and boat to Tortuguero today and have just arrived. Neat to have internet again, missed you my friends.

We’ve been in Costa Rica for just over two weeks and so much has happened! Robbery, sickness, and finally things are starting to settle down. We’ve been banding at Tortuguero for the past week, and it is HOT here. We can see the beach from one side of our house and the river from the other- it is quite beautiful. The banding is good, more bird pics to come, also bugs etc.

We took a trip out to Lamma Island on Saturday and had some FOOD.

Our second full day in HK! We went to Tai Tam Tuk Reservoir to check out some birds and then had a victory beer at the waterfront in Stanley Mkt. At Tai Tam we saw a large flock of Japanese White-eyes, some Yellow-browed Warblers (and at least one Dusky Warbler?), a couple Whiskered Bulbuls, some Chinese Bulbuls, and three Fork-tailed Sunbirds (the coolest!).

Leaving Palo tomorrow, so here’s a photo from my first day of banding!
We’re headed to Hong Kong on Monday and then I’ll be in North Carolina for Christmas, Minnesota for New Years (with the All Stars) and Costa Rica to band until April.
Will miss Palo a lot- a very special community here.
